Full Version: The Ultimate Phonetic Keyboard
OmicronLab Community > Avro Keyboard - Unicode Compliant Free Bangla Typing Software > Wish a feature for Avro Keyboard
Sajid Choudhury
Ok, avro is now the best bangla computing software. It gave us the ultimate freedom of editing our keyboard layout (Now we can have 52! - 1 number of patented keyboard layout, one taken by Mr. M. Jabbar) It also allowed professional typists to use old style typing. Now I am suggesting a feature that would take Bangla computing to the next level:

I want to suggest a different phonetic typing engine. As far as I know, and understand, to use avro phonetic keyboard layout, we have to use capital and small letters of ABCD properly. Now we type sms in roman alphabets and it is a bit annoying to use the shift key multiple times during typing (even in fixed layout, we need to keep pressing shift) Now if avro has a rendering engine, that would generate the word from the keystrokes regardless of the case, that would be fantastic. A similar method is used in T9 text input in mobile phones. You press the same 1, 2, 3s and the mobile generates the words. If there is ambiguity, you can press * key or choose from alternatives based on your handset. Avro has a popup window showing the english text. Showing alternate banglas would not make it too hard.

The problem is to make a large enough dictionary to for all bangla words, popular banglish words, and names. There will be custom user inputs, and the users will be able to upload their dictionary file to avro server (there should be an automatic option for this by default)

I think within 2-3 months, and 2-3 beta versions, the new model will be strong enough. If you can make it, then new users will not be attracted to the traditional input methods.

What do you think, please respond.

There are already some discussion in our forum about "Shift Less Keyboard Layout" or "The Ultimate Phonetic Keyboard".

Actually, At this moment we don't want to go for this. Changing behavior is a quite tough thing. For example, many user report that, the change of 'Cha' in the last version of Avro is not suitable for them.

Could you give me a link to the discussions. And you don't need to change the existing one. Just add another true phonetic keyboard. Shabdik has made a bangla SMS software for teletalk, and they implemented T9 with bangla. I don't think it would be that difficult considering we have 30 times processing power than a mobile phone in a computer. And even to make the dictionary of words, the entire avro community can help.

But this is quite opposite of what I ment. When typing Banglish in mobiles we dont type Dhaka as ddaka. Reapiting letters meaninglessly is just like using the shift key. I was talking about T9. One key (or perhaps even less) per character. If it is standardized with 2.5-5lakh words, the typing speed of professional typists would jump to double, and the regime of Bijoy Keyboard, or Inscript would be over once and for all

Thanks for the tip. Keeping my fingers crossed.

By the way, I just used Ubuntu 8.04. Missed Avro there very much :-(

The ultimate phonetic layout seems to be there for hindi, tamil, telegu, and malaylam. Too bad for us, Bengalis :-(, who outnumber most of those languages in number of speakers.

Check out here at blogger:

You type blogger and it is automatically converted to hindi. (Carefully observe. Hindi and bengali scripts are somewhat similar, and you can actually read blogger.) And the short menu of alternate spellings is brilliant

Yep, I can assure, something like this has already been implemented for next version of Avro, and this is a 3 months old news smile.gif
