Ro-Zofola problem :: The cause and solution

After releasing Avro Keyboard 4.5.3 on 21 August 2010, we’ve received several “bug report” that R-Zo fola (র‍্য) isn’t being rendered correctly. People facing this problem are using Windows XP or earlier OS. We’ve mentioned in the change log that we’ve fixed R-Zo fola, they were wondering how could a fix can break anything?

After Khandata (ৎ), R-Zo fola seems to be the most discussed issue in Bangla Unicode. Here goes the disclaimer that the problem lies in your Windows and this is NOT a bug of Avro Keyboard.

Avro Keyboard 5 (beta) will be released soon!

Well, the title says a lot! After 3 years of hard work, we are going to release a major update of Avro Keyboard (version 5, beta) at the end of September, 2010.

It has been hard three years. We’ve made some ambitious plans and to accomplish them we had to rewrite every line of code from scratch. That’s rewriting whole fifty thousand lines! To make typing Bangla even simpler, things got extremely complex under the hood. Good news is that we have finished our work lately!

Site and forum optimized for speed

We are well aware of the slow net connectivity problem in Bangladesh (and sufferer, too). After moving to a new host, we realized that our site isn’t optimized enough to utilize the power of the new hardware. Arif bhai (currently working for Google) insisted us to work on this issue and gave us hints on where to start. Despite of the saying “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” , Rifat and me engaged ourselves in further optimizing the whole site for more robust content delivery for last few days.

Moved to a new VPS hosting

It has been a disaster after we released updated Avro Keyboard 4.5.3. 80GB bandwidth of our previous hosting plan went over all of a sudden. We did take all precautions to avoid this incidence- removed download link from our main server and added four different mirrors, but in vain. The site went down for 2 days and 20 hours!

We did learn our lesson. We realized how popular Avro Keyboard is becoming everyday. And despite of the disastrous consequence, that was a great inspiration for us to move forward!
