How to Type Bangla in iPhone/iPad/iPod

iOS 4 introduced the best Bangla support till date for smartphones. Though it can display Bangla text, unfortunately there is no official input method to type it. So here’s our workaround for Avro Phonetic users:

1) Go to the following URL with your iPhone Safari: http://www.VistaArc.com/iAvroPad/

2) Click on the Share button in Safari (right beside the Back/Forward buttons)

3) Click on the Add to Home Screen button, and voila, Avro Typepad will appear on your home screen with other apps!

Now whenever you need to type Bangla, launch iAvroPad, type Bangla phonetically and copy>paste from there.

HOW TO: Fix Bengali Display Problem in Firefox 4 and 5

Many users are complaining on the forum and our Facebook Page about Bengali not showing up properly after upgrading Firefox. This is a bug in Firefox and here’s how you can fix it.

  1. Go to Firefox Options > Content > Fonts & Colors > Click on Advanced
  2. Under Fonts for > Select Bengali from dropdown list
  3. Select Siyam Rupali or any other good Bengali font.

Sometimes you may need to this 2-3 times. After this, there should not be any problem.

গত ৪ ফেব্রুয়ারি, ২০১১ ঢাকার বঙ্গবন্ধু আন্তর্জাতিক সম্মেলন কেন্দ্রে অনুষ্ঠিত হয় BASIS Award Night 2011। বেসিস (বাংলাদেশ অ্যাসোসিয়েশন অফ সফটওয়্যার অ্যান্ড ইনফরমেশন সার্ভিসেস) আয়োজিত এ অনুষ্ঠানে বাংলাদেশের তথ্যপ্রযুক্তি শিল্পে বিশেষ অবদানের জন্য অভ্র কিবোর্ডকেও পুরস্কৃত করা হয়। বিজ্ঞান এবং তথ্য ও যোগাযোগ প্রযুক্তি (আইসিটি) প্রতিমন্ত্রী জনাব ইয়াফেস ওসমান এ পুরষ্কারটি তুলে দেন উপস্থিত অভ্র টিমের সদস্যদের হাতে।

বাংলাদেশ নির্বাচন কমিশনের কাছ থেকে স্বীকৃতির পরে এটা অভ্রর জন্য বড় আরেকটি প্রাতিষ্ঠানিক সম্মাননা। অভ্রর অসংখ্য ব্যবহারকারীর কাছ থেকে পাওয়া ভালোবাসার সাথে সাথে এই স্বীকৃতিও আমাদের পথ চলায় উৎসাহ দিয়ে যাবে নিরন্তর।

A lesson we’ve learnt and you’ll learn today

This post is targeted to developers.

Before I start, there should be a little introduction. May be you have heard that Bangladesh Election Commission has used Avro Keyboard in National ID card project. Before deciding to go for it, they knocked us with a “problem” that they cannot programmatically control keyboard mode (Bangla/English) of Avro Keyboard. They can generate F12 keystroke by an external software, Avro just ignores it. In their application there were many fields to type in, some requires Bangla, some English. If these fields could automatically control keyboard mode of Avro Keyboard, change it automatically when it needs Bangla or English without manually pressing the hotkey, the operators life would be much easier. Although what they reported was quite intended behavior in Avro Keybord and not a bug, we agreed to them and delivered them what they needed.

But still today, if you try generating F12 (say in your c# application) you will see that Avro just ignores it. Why is that? Haven’t we learned something from the past?

What’s new in Avro Keyboard 5.1.0

  • The whole project has been rewritten from scratch for better performance
  • Avro Keyboard is now Open Source, licensed under Mozilla Public License 1.1
  • New Bangla Spell Checker. Both for plain text and rich text (through MS Word add-in).
  • New Kalpurush Bangla font. Siyam Rupali is updated and now Windows 7 ready.
  • New ANSI typing mode. Avro Keyboard can now be used with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and what not! New ANSI version of Siyam Rupali and Kalpurush fonts are provided, they are completely compatible with fonts from Bijoy 2000 version.
  • New Font Fixer and iComplex. They now work right inside the installer. The installer also can update usp10.dll if it is allowed and the dll already installed is faulty.
  • New Dictionary based typing mode in Avro Phonetic.
  • New Unicode to ANSI (Bijoy 2000) plain text converter tool.
  • New Keyboard Mode switcher key – Ctrl+Space. Ctrl+Alt+B option is removed.
  • New cool splash screen and windows 7 ready icons. Showing splash screen at startup is now optional. New icon in system tray.
  • System tray menu now has everything of the Top Bar.

নতুন বছরেই আসছে অভ্র কিবোর্ড ৫ এর ফুল ভার্শন

অভ্র কিবোর্ডকে ঢেলে সাজানোর কাজটা আমরা শুরু করি ২০০৭ এ। ২০১০-এ এসে কাজ প্রাথমিকভাবে শেষ হয় এবং ওমিক্রনল্যাব ব্লগে আমরা পাবলিক বেটা ছাড়ার ঘোষণা দেই। তার আগে প্রাথমিক ভুলভ্রান্তি শোধরানোর জন্য আমরা নিজেদের মধ্যে একটা প্রাইভেট বেটা প্রোগ্রামের আয়োজন করেছিলাম। অভ্র টীমের সবার সাথে সেখানে সক্রিয়ভাবে সহায়তা করেছেন সচলায়তনের দ্রোহীদা, সবজান্তা। ৩০ সেপ্টেম্বর ২০১০ ছাড়া হয় প্রথম পাবলিক বেটা ভার্শন। (দিনটি আমাদের কাছে আরও একটা কারণে স্মরণীয় হয়ে থাকবে – ২০০৩ থেকে বিনামূল্যের সফটওয়্যার অভ্র কিবোর্ড সেদিন মুক্ত সফটওয়্যার হিসেবে প্রকাশিত হয়।) অভাবনীয় সাড়া পেয়েছি আমরা তখন থেকেই। সবাই স্বেচ্ছায় এগিয়ে এসেছেন বাগ খুঁজে বের করতে, নিজেদের মূল্যবান সময় দিয়ে আমাদের সমস্যার কথা জানিয়েছেন, নতুন ফিচারের জন্য আবেদন করেছেন। এখানে বিশেষ করে জাপান প্রবাসী আজিম ভাইয়ের কথা না বললেই নয়। একটি বারের জন্যও মনে হয়নি এই ভদ্রলোক অভ্র টীমের বাইরের কেউ।

লিনাক্সে বাংলা ইউনিকোড ফন্টগুলো একবারে ইন্সটল করার সহজ সমাধান

লিনাক্সের জন্য এর আগে ৩০টি বাংলা ইউনিকোড ফন্ট ইন্সটল করার জন্য একটা bash script বেসড ইন্সটলার তৈরি করেছিলাম। সেটা মোটামুটি কাজ করলেও তার ছিল অনেক সীমাবদ্ধতা। তাই এইবারে স্ক্রিপ্ট বেজড ইন্সটলারের পরিবর্তে ttf-banglaunicode ডেবিয়ান প্যাকেজ বানিয়ে নিলাম। এর ফলে এখন থেকে ফন্টগুলো আরো সহজে ইন্সটল করা যাবে। ডেবিয়ানের প্যাকেজ ফাইলটি ডাউনলোড করে নিয়ে শুধু তার উপর ডাবল ক্লিক করলেই স্বয়ংক্রিয়ভাবে ৩০টি বাংলা ইউনিকোড ফন্ট ইন্সটল হয়ে যাবে। ফন্টগুলো নেয়া হয়েছে ওমিক্রনল্যাবের সাইট থেকে।

Font Fixer and iComplex updated

Font Fixer Font Fixer 2.0.0

Font Fixer has been proved as a popular tool since Microsoft release Vrinda as their default Bangla font for Windows. Most people just don’t feel comfortable with this font as it is too small to read easily (specially on Windows Xp and Vista). Font Fixer let users uninstall it and let any Bangla font to be set as default,  everything with a single click.

However, the earlier version of Font Fixer failed to uninstall Vrinda on Windows Vista and Windows 7. On these newer versions of Windows, even an administrator doesn’t have delete access to system fonts unless he takes the ownership from “TrustedInstaller” explicitly.

Ro-Zofola problem :: The cause and solution [Part 2]

Earlier post described why should you update your Windows Xp to Windows Vista or later to view Ra-Zofola correctly. Those who are willing to continue using Windows Xp, the solution is to update usp10.dll. Here’s how to do that. I’ve tried to find the easiest solution, if anyone find any easier one, please let us know.
